A Brief History

The Encounters Schools work project was born out of a prayer meeting which was held on Monday, 8th February 1996. Twenty-three people met together to pray about the possibility of starting a schools work project. At the end of the meeting it was suggested that we should not wait 12 months for another prayer meeting and therefore meetings were arranged forthwith on a monthly basis.

On 15 July 1996 the then Crusaders Surrey Area chairman, Julian Bird, came to tell us about Schools Workers employed by Crusaders.

On 23 September the then Director of Crusaders, Alan Kirby, came with Sue Trainer, the St.Albans' schools worker for Crusaders, to tell some 40 interested people about schools work and setting up a project.

A Management Committee was set up almost immediately.

By May 1997 Seven local churches formed the Committee for Reigate & Redhill Schools Worker, this was officially launched in October 1997.

First appointees were Caroline White (early 1998 - 2000) and Carol Cooper (Admin Assistant).

Next came Roland Sokolowski (2000- 2004), Dawn Johnson (Admin Assistant) and Ruth Wilcox (Admin Assistant).

We currently have Yvette Upton (2005 - ) and Isobel Nott (Admin Assistant).
